Patron Saints of the Environment

Patrons are saints venerated for their special intercessory role with God. They are chosen based on popular devotion and tradition. The origins of patronal devotion may be unclear historically, but their significance remains strong.

In this case, the following saints demonstrated their devotion to the environment through the way they lived.

St. Kateri Tekakwitha

Kateri is known as the “Lily of the Mohawks” and the “Beautiful Flower Among True Men.” She is recognized for her heroic faith, virtue, and love of God and people, in the face of adversity, bullying, and rejection, as well as her close connection with the natural world around her.

St. Phocas the Gardener

Phocas is remembered for his hospitality and generosity; his garden played an essential part in living both of those virtues. A protector of persecuted Christians, Phocas grew crops in his garden to help feed the poor.

St. Therese of Lisieux

Therese saw the seasons as reflecting the seasons of God's love affair with us. She loved flowers and saw herself as the "little flower of Jesus," who gave glory to God by just being her beautiful little self among all the other flowers in God's garden. Because of this beautiful analogy, the title "little flower" remained with St. Therese.
